Welcome to The Thing About Flying (TTAF). You may have some questions about the site, like who we are and what are we trying to do, and hopefully we can answer those now.
This website started, as all great ideas do, with four guys in a hot tub. No, seriously, that is exactly how it started. The four administrators get together every Thursday night to hang out, discuss books, sports, life, etc., and it soon became evident that we all had something in common. None of us were actually satisfied with our positions in life, particularly in the area of vocation. So we started to spend time each week doing something that we enjoyed, mainly writing – specifically writing towards the goal of improving as men. Contributing writers were brought on, ideas discussed, bourbon sipped, and cigars smoked, again in a hot tub, until the result that you see before you: The Thing About Flying. This is not to suggest that the site will not further evolve, only that this is how we have reached our current state. We hope that what is written and posted here will not only entertain and provide information, but that it will also inspire you to live a different kind of life, a life that makes people notice something different about you.
We want to not only create a blog but also a community for men. Our experience is that relating to other guys going through the same things that you are is extremely helpful, just as the four of us meet every week we want to create a larger “meeting” space here on the site. Also, please note that we do not think that we have all the answers, or that our opinions are the only or best ones out there. We are simply writing what we think as we navigate through this.
So what do we want you to do? First of all we want you to read and enjoy the site. Secondly, we want you to participate by sharing your comments, ideas, articles, pictures, etc. Tell us what you like and what you do not like, start discussions in the comments section and feel free to email us. We also want you to share the site with the guys around you. Tweet it, share, link it, and just tell other people about stuff you read here, the more people that get on the site and contribute, the better the quality and the diversity of opinions we will have.
Before we go, a note about categories. Categories are how we divide up the posts here on TTAF and below you will find a description of each.
A Name Worth Remembering- These are short, biographical sketches of men that we think you should know more about.
Ground Ball Democracy- These are posts about sports.
The Tape Deck- All things music.
A First Faint Gleam- To have Faith in Christ] means, of course, trying to do all that He says. There would be no sense in saying you trusted a person if you would not take his advice. Thus if you have really handed yourself over to Him, it must follow that you are trying to obey Him. But trying in a new way, a less worried way. Not doing these things in order to be saved, but because He has begun to save you already. Not hoping to get to Heaven as a reward for your actions, but inevitably wanting to act in a certain way because a first faint gleam of Heaven is already inside you. -C.S. Lewis-
Leave A Trail- These are posts about all things outdoors.
Outside of A Dog- Anything book related will fall under this category.
Friday at Five- The last original content post of the week, something to start your weekend off right.
Saturday Morning New- Selected news stories from the week.
Saturday Evening Links- Providing you with the best the internet has to offer.
Bedside Baptist- For those Sunday mornings when you don’t make it to church.
The Church Newsletter- Imagine a mix between your church announcements and The Onion
Sunday Night Speeches- Speeches in audio, video, or text form.
Skin A Cat- These will be “how to” posts of various kinds.
Slainte Mhath- Posts dealing with food and drink.
The Junk Drawer- Anything that does not fit into one of the categories above.
So with that being said, look through the material we have already posted and be prepared for daily updates. Thanks for visiting the The Thing About Flying.
