TTAF Month One . . . Looking Back and Toward What’s to Come

It has officially been a month since The Thing about flying began, so we want take a break from our regularly scheduled programming just to say thanks to those who have been reading and to remind you of the ways you can take part in the mission of this site.

A few months ago, The Thing About Flying was nothing more than a few of us guys complaining, for one reason or another, about where we found ourselves in life. And we couldn’t imagine we were alone. We knew that there had to be plenty of others in their twenties or thirties (or any age, for that matter) trying to figure out their way in the world just the same as we were, looking back at how they’d pictured life would be and comparing it to their present reality. We imagined some others might be a little disgruntled, disappointed, or a little discouraged. And we just wanted to talk to that.

It is for that reason that The Thing About Flying was born. As much as we might act like we have an awful lot figured out, we don’t. As much as we like to give advice—some serious and some only partly so—we are looking to you guys for just as much in return. TTAF does not exist for us to impress our infinite wisdom upon you. The fact is, as you may well know, we don’t have that much wisdom to offer (probably even less than we think we do). We are not the greatest guys you’ll ever meet. We’re not the manliest guys in the world, or the greatest husbands or fathers or brothers or sons.  TTAF does not exist for those who have it all figured out. TTAF exists to create a community among guys who are working to better themselves and the world around them. It exists to be a place for guys to get together, share with one another, learn from each other, and walk together on this journey we call life.

When we began, we had no idea what to expect. We had no idea how many people might be interested in the concept behind the sight or in what we had to say. But honestly, we’ve been blown away. It’s been just over one month and more people have visited TTAF in this first month than we could have ever expected, and from locations more vast than we even believe. Seriously, as of today, TTAF has been visited from over 55 countries, and that’s just unreal. Better yet, we’ve had a great amount of contact from you guys both on the site and with our twitter handle (@onelessrib).  And we can’t thank you guys enough; we truly appreciate the words of encouragement and support that you have shown.

But again, the real reason this is so exciting for the four of us, and the reason it encourages us the way that it does is not merely because of the number of hits the site has gotten, but because we truly believe this place can be a great place to build community and walk along side one another to become better men, for ourselves, for our friends, for our family, and for the communities in which we live.

That being said, we want to encourage you guys to continue to not just visit the site, but to interact with us and with one another. There are a number of ways to do so. The simplest, of course, is to leave your thoughts in the comment section at the end of the various posts. We’ve been encouraged by the comments left thus far, and look forward to hearing more and more of your perspectives.

Secondly, remember to follow our twitter handle, @onelessrib. We tweet fairly often to announce new posts, to point you toward other sites or articles that we find interesting, and to just share our random thoughts.

Thirdly, if you like what we do here at TTAF, and have ideas of your own regarding topics you’d like to see posts written about, or if you’d like to take part in the site by writing some posts of your own, please feel free to send your ideas to us at thethingaboutflying@gmail.com. Over the next few weeks, you’ll start to see guest posts becoming a very normal part of the site as, again, this was all designed with community in mind, and we really do value the insights that can be offered from a very diverse group of people. We would be greatly excited to have you guys sharing with us your own experiences or expertise.

Lastly, we just want to let you guys know that we’re incredibly excited about the things we have coming down the pike. Some of the things we already have scheduled—including interviews with professional athletes, an entire week dedicated to one of the greatest movies ever made, and several weeks of working in coordination with a truly great guy who has been a mentor and father(like figure) to us over the years—have us celebrating already. But our ideas, the directions we want to head, and our ambitions for the kinds of things we are working to incorporate into the site have us nothing less than giddy (that’s probably not a very manly way to put it). We hope you guys stick around, continue to visit, and begin to interact with this community in the coming weeks. We feel truly blessed to walk alongside you and we hope to do so long into the future.
